Textile Engineering Education in Bangladesh । An Overview

And this has been possible due to the enormous research and developments on different sides of textile engineering. In Bangladesh, textile engineering is the cream subject for study as it offers job opportunities full of benefits as compared to any other discipline. The textile engineering degree is being offered at BUTEXKUETDUETMBSTU along with a lot of private universities in different cities of Bangladesh. On top of that, there are some (seven textile college so far updated on the BUTEX official website) affiliated textile colleges with BUTEX maintaining the same course curriculum and offering the same B.Sc. degree under BUTEX.

Now let’s have a look into the departmental reviews, what are the objectives and job opportunities of these departments.

Textile Engineering Departmental Reviews:

👉Yarn Engineering

This department is the very first department of textile engineering. Dealing with raw fibres from different sources like natural or man-made sources and converting them into yarn of various quality are the main functions of this department. So this department’s activities are dedicated to the fibres and manufacturing yarn from those fibres. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Yarn Production Executive,
  • Yarn Quality Executive,

👉Fabric Engineering

The Fabric Engineering department is designed to deal with different types of fabric constructions like weaving, knitting, non-weaving etc. from the yarn received from the previous department (yarn engineering). Producing and analyzing the fabric of required properties from the yarns is the motto of this department. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Production Executive (Knitting),
  • Production Executive (Denim Weaving),
  • Production Executive (shirting weaving),
  • Production Executive (sweater), and
  • Fabric Technologist (Buying house).

👉Wet Processing Engineering

The colouration (dyeing and printing) of textile materials especially fibres, yarns, or fabrics are the principal function of this department. So this department deals with the necessary pre and post-treatments of the colouration process. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

Garment washing and garment dyeing are the two other most important branches of the apparel engineering department. A wide range of global fashion demands is being created by washing and garment dyeing. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Production Executive (Garment),
  • Production Executive (washing-dry process),
  • Production Executive (washing-wet process),
  • Production Executive (Finishing),
  • Garment Technologist (Buying House).

👉Textile Engineering Management

Covering the overall textile issues mentioned above is the primary motive of this department. This department is specially designed to ensure managerial skills along with the necessary technical skills of a textile engineer. Textile marketing, merchandising and HR positions are the most promising fields of this department. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Marketing Executive (Yarn/Fabric/Dyes/Garment),

👉Industrial & Production Engineering

This department has been launched to meet some essential requirements of the RMG industry. A few years back the garment industry was not well organized and there was no structured approach to measure productivity and reduce wastes. work-study, time study, workers’ capacity, factory capacity, line balancing, line layout, removing bottlenecking are the key functions of this department. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Industrial Engineer,
  • Maintenance Executive,
  • Planning Executive.

👉Textile Fashion & Design

Though Bangladesh RMG industry is earning a notable foreign currency every year and contributing to the national economy, most of the garment designers or fashion brand designers are hired from abroad especially from INDIA. As we have almost 5000 garment factories and all of these factories need textile designers. Because without designers, it is not possible to cut and make a single piece of garment. So dealing with the pattern or garment design is the primary function of the department. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

👉Dyes & Chemicals Engineering

Though we have a huge market of dyeing (yarn dyeing, fabric dyeing-knit and woven) we have no dyes and chemical processing plants rather have to import all the required dyes and chemicals. Keeping this necessity in mind, this department has been recently started its journey. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Lab Executive,
  • Colour specialist,
  • Executive (Dyes & chemicals synthesis)

👉Environmental Science & Engineering

The textile dyeing industry disposes of a huge amount of dyes and chemicals after use as effluents to the environment and consequently polluting the environment especially air and rivers drastically. To ensure a safe and sustainable environment is the primary motto of this department. Graduates from this department can start their job as-

  • Executive (Water Treatment),

N.B.: To date graduates from any department can join in any job in any sector and the course curriculum has been designed accordingly focusing largely on textile courses. For example, every department roughly has 164 credits to complete for the degree from which approximately 120 credits are textile-based and the rest are departmental specializations. Moreover, textile engineering graduates are also found in the diverse fields both in the public and private sectors.
